the last sugarcane factory
In January of 2010 the decision was made to dismantle the sugar processing factory at Usine, Ste Madeleine, Trinidad. The factory would have been in operation since 1900. We made sure to archive the factory before it was sold for scrap. After many letters our request was granted by the Divestment Secretariat, Ministry of Finance in 2009.
The factory was then a symbol of the journey of East Indians in Trinidad, from Indentureship to self-autonomy. When we photographed it the factory still hummed with its powered electrical system and it stood mostly intact. A few months later it lay in ruins with most of its salvageable metal work sold off for scrap.
